A perfect sized group gathered for the annual nest count in the Samish Island Heronry. Snacks and drinks on hand.
Enough chatter! Let's get going!
After introductions, some general information, and gear-gathering, we head on in - looking for nests!
Divide into groups of three and each group gets a section of the area to count. The boundary is marked like this
Last year, counted trees were flagged with pink. This year with yellow. Trees with nests from before have a metal, numbered tag. We'll find a few new trees with nests and add the metal tag.
The nests are quite high up, and often hidden. It takes many eyes to see and count them. One person in a team records all the information.
