A hearty mix of 11 experienced counters and several newbies bundled up and braved the snow and cold early in the morning. Here we get some orientation.
We even have a "12th Man" participant!
Samish Island Heron Nest Count
December 09, 2016
Geared up and heading in.
Some "invasive" (but still pretty) Holly.
Trees have numbered metal tags. Pink flagging means reported last year. When we finish reporting the tree this year we replace the pink with red.
It takes a LOT of looking way up to see and count the nests.
Remnants of a fallen nest.
The trees are very tall and the nests are way up there.
Recording information.
There are a lot of them.
It WAS cold, but we had hot drinks and snacks.
For those who have been here before, do you remember how the field next door USED to be?
Thanks Everyone.
How about this great photo from nest counter Dennis Parent!
