Barney Lake Tree Planting
                                                              January 19, 2026
About 20 hearty volunteers and staff from the Land Trust came out on a pretty, frosty morning to plant some trees.

This is part of the Barney Lake property and is right along College Way in Mt. Vernon as you head east from town.

Lots of plantings done here in the past and many more to come.  It is a BIG place that is mostly canary grass and in need of a nice diverse forest along Trumpeter Creek.

A second group of a similar size came out in the afternoon!

It is a MLK Day of Service project.

Some intros and instructions, a planting demo, shovels, gloves, tree protectors and bags of trees staged out in planting area.

Let's go!

We try to plant down a mowed row.  But a little wiggle good!

A little straight good too.

Those protectors are often hidden by the unmown grass.  But a LOT of progress here.

This young lady works alone, well, and fast!

A real expert.

It was -
MUDDY GOO
in places!

Thanks Skagit Land Trust for warm beverages and fine snacks and TO US!
for getting around 200+ trees in the ground.
