Nearly 40 people braved a cold but beautiful winter day to tour the Heronry on Samish Island.
This Heronry is not accessible in spring and summer when the birds are there. It is also generally not accessible at other times because it is on private land, which has been protected with an easment with the Skagit Land Trust.
So this was a special treat and many of the 200+ nests could be seen in the leafless trees. Fallen nests and broken eggs were seen on the ground as well.
Land Trust volunteer Brenda Cunningham gave us much useful information about the birds and their habits.
