Twenty some hardy volunteers out to learn about herons and count the nests at the Samish Island heronry. A fun job and some great sights. First we get some introduction and basic knowledge.
Out in the woods we learn the process, get our materials, and see some nests!!!
You have to look WAY up there - we all practice. Let's see if we all count the same number of nests in the tree.
We also practice spotting trees with tags and flagging. They have been counted in previous years and we need to replace the flagging and redo the nest count and record it. Count records are compared from year to year - nests and trees.
We divide into three groups and each takes a section of property to count. Here is a group getting ready to start.
