Each metal tag is numbered. The blue flagging is from last year's count. We will replace it this year with yellow. If we find an un-tagged tree with nests it means they are new and we will put a tag on that tree too. To the right, the red flagging marks the boundary of the property. This heronry has about 100 trees with nests!
Each group has a recorder to accurately capture the tree number, the number of nests, the condition of the tree and if there are shells, feathers, or blown down nests around it.
"Citizen Science" at it's best! And so helpful, educational, entertaining, and inspiring. Those nests are something to see and think about!
Thanks everyone.
